Designed by Vienna’s Querkraft the facility will include 38 interlocking cones cut off from the top and plastered with clay.
Ground has been broken on Expo 2020 Dubai’s Austria Pavilion, with construction work on the Every Good Idea Begins with the Right Question-themed facility that is being built blending 38 interlocking cones on a 2,400m2 area to create “a harmonious structure”.
According to the UAE’s state-held news agency, Wam, the foundation stone for the pavilion was laid in the presence of commissioner-general, Beatrix Karl, and executive director of Expo 2020 Dubai Bureau, Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali.
Vienna-based Querkraft has designed the Austrian Pavilion, which will feature an innovation lab that will host lectures as well as exhibitions during the global event’s six-month lifespan.
Located within the World Expo’s Opportunity District, the Austrian Pavilion will use world’s oldest building material and a unique ventilation concept with wind towers to provide a comfortable atmosphere.
The cones within the pavilion will be between 6 and 15 metres high, and will be cut off at the top and plastered with clay.
Speaking about the construction work on the pavilion, Al-Ali said: “We look forward to seeing Austria’s innovative and exciting construction efforts come to life as we continue our journey together towards a once-in-a-lifetime celebration in less than a year’s time at Expo 2020.”
Meanwhile, Karl said: “The two countries share almost the same size in terms of population and area, and the UAE is Austria’s most important economic partner in the Near and Middle East.”
